The Disaster Artist

Let's start off with two titles that recently debuted new, full trailers at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Disaster Artist - James Franco stars as Tommy Wiseau, a passionate filmmaker who directed the beloved cult title The Room. Dave Franco and Seth Rogen also star.

Downsizing - Alexander Payne's movie sparked very good buzz coming out of the Venice International Film Festival, though reactions have been more mixed during its screenings at the Telluride and Toronto festivals. A new trailer establishes the unusual premise very well; Matt Damon stars.

Fandango correspondent Alicia Malone shared her thoughts on notable titles, joined by our own Erik Davis to talk about Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; her video also provides a feel for the general festival atmosphere.

What other movies did Erik Davis recommend?

Foxtrot - A drama from Israel about a family learning about something going terribly wrong at their son's military post.

The Shape of Water - starring Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones and Michael Shannon; directed by Guillermo del Toro. The movie continues to build positive buzz

How about Alicia Malone?

Lean on Pete - a new drama from director Andrew Haigh (45 Years) stars Travis Fimmel and Chloe Sevigny.

Unicorn Store - Brie Larson makes her directorial debut.

What other movies have gained notice?

Breathe - Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy star in the romantic true story; Andy Serkis directs.

Mudbound - Two men struggle with racism in rural Mississippi after World War II.

Woman Walks Ahead - Jessica Chastain stars as a portrait painter from Brooklyn who becomes involved in the Lakota people's struggle for the rights to their land.

This is not a critical reaction, but we couldn't help sharing Chastain's self-deprecating social media post.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs through Sunday, September 17.
